GSI OFFERS DIGITAL PLOTTING
High-Tech Solution Brings Greater Report Accessibility, Accuracy and Security
(February 1, 2007)
Gemological Science International (GSI) announced today that it has added digital plotting to its list of proprietary, high-tech software applications for diamond grading. Digital plotting not only reduces paperwork and streamlines the grading process, it allows access to plotted diagrams and reports from anywhere in the world, said GSI president/CEO Mark Gershburg.
“We can now plot a diamond in our lab in Mumbai and print out the report in New York—or vice versa,” said Gershburg. “It gives us tremendous flexibility in addition to the benefits of more accurate plotting.” GSI also sees digital plotting as an important benefit for its growing number of e-commerce customers, who want to see the actual report with a plot without having to scan it.
GSI is the only major lab, other than GIA, that does digital plotting, according to Gershburg. He explained that in many other labs, graders plot the diamond by hand onto a diamond diagram, but the final hand copying onto the grading report is often not done by a gemologist. At GSI the grader plots the diamonds directly into the computerized diagram, and it shows up, exactly as plotted, on the final printed report. “This technology reduces human error that can occur when plotting is copied onto the report,” explained Gershburg.
With a report that is fully digitized, GSI can also easily replicate it in the event of loss or damage. “It used to be that only diamonds were ‘forever’; now we can say that our reports are also forever, because the plotting has been digitized and saved,” said Gershburg, whose goal is to take the lab business in the direction of a paperless office.
To that end GSI has developed a highly computerized and automated grading lab, where customers can view online their actual final grading report as soon as it is printed and track, Fed Ex-style, the status of their diamonds 24/7, among other innovations.
A full-service gem lab, GSI’s clients are mainly large manufacturers, major jewelry chains, department stores, and online jewelers. It is headquartered in New York City’s Diamond District at 581 Fifth Avenue and has an office in Mumbai, India.
