Emeralds have long been celebrated for their captivating green hues, yet their beauty often comes with the challenge of inherent fractures. Historically, oiling has been the traditional method for enhancing emerald clarity, filling surface-reaching fissures to improve appearance. However, the landscape of emerald treatments has evolved dramatically.
At GSI, we work closely with our global laboratory network, including our state-of-the-art laboratory in Jaipur, one of the epicenters of the global colored gemstone market. In Jaipur, we are witnessing a growing number of emeralds subjected to increasingly sophisticated treatments, many of which go undetected by the untrained eye. To stay ahead of this evolving landscape, GSI is continuously engaged in advanced research and development. New-age treatments demand new-age solutions, and we remain committed to ensuring that our methods and technologies stay at the forefront of treatment detection and analysis.
From Traditional Oil to Precision Resin

The shift from oil-based to resin-based treatments represents a significant advancement in emerald enhancement. Unlike oil, which often leaves visible traces under magnification, resin treatments are introduced using heat and pressure, allowing fillers to penetrate fractures more evenly and seamlessly. While this results in improved apparent clarity, it also presents a new challenge: the treatment is frequently undetectable to the unaided eye.
The once-visible fissures are now nearly imperceptible, and even under magnification, the smooth fracture surfaces may offer little indication of treatment. However, despite their sophistication, resin treatments are not without shortcomings. Improper application or uneven filler distribution can result in optical anomalies, such as golden or blue flashes. While visually striking, these flashes often indicate instability or inconsistent treatment conditions and require advanced gemological expertise and instrumentation to detect and interpret accurately.
Modern emeralds frequently undergo multiple generations of treatment. A gemstone initially filled with resin may later be re-oiled or treated with a different resin, resulting in layered fillers within the same fissures. This added complexity introduces significant challenges, as mixed fillers may exhibit varying responses during analysis, making it increasingly difficult to identify the original treatment material. In such cases, reconstructing a complete treatment history often requires specialized equipment and advanced analytical techniques.
Even with thorough cleaning procedures, residual resin commonly remains within emeralds. Solvents such as acetone are often used to remove excess fillers, but complete removal is rarely achieved. Residual resin can interact with subsequent oils or resins, forming composite mixtures that complicate both visual and spectroscopic analysis. As a result, what may appear to be a simple oil treatment can, in fact, conceal deeper layers of resin posing significant challenges for accurate identification and valuation.
The role of resin does not end with treatment. During cutting and polishing, lapidaries frequently use quick-setting adhesives to stabilize emeralds. The heat and pressure applied during polishing can force these resins deeper into existing fractures, where they interact with earlier fillers. This fusion creates complex mixtures of oils and resins, often producing optical effects such as flashes or iridescence, further complicating the identification process.
At GSI, we are committed to transparency in emerald treatment disclosure, providing accurate identification and clear reporting of treatment levels wherever applicable. Precise determination of filler materials requires a sophisticated combination of advanced analytical techniques, including detailed microscopic examination, FTIR spectroscopy from multiple orientations, multi-spot confocal Raman analysis, and supportive UV fluorescence studies.
As emerald treatments continue to evolve in complexity, identifying both intentional and unintentional filler substances remains a significant challenge for gemological laboratories worldwide. This is where GSI’s expertise truly stands apart. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and deep gemological knowledge, we navigate the intricacies of modern treatments with unmatched precision.
At GSI, we remain at the forefront of gemological advancements, ensuring that every emerald we analyze is fully understood and supported by the transparency and confidence our clients and their customers expect.
